INDIAN SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE CLINIC
Datom, India
OHO SOCIAL VENTURE INITIATIVE WITH THE MORINGA PROJECT
Working with a dedicated team of local people, passionate about providing their community with access to healthcare, the Traditional Healthcare (TH) Project combines holistic medicine, permaculture and sustainable building practices. Together they are progressively achieving the community’s dream of building a sustainable hospital. During the active season of the year, hundreds of residents receive health care on a daily basis thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers.
This project is based in a remote village of Datom in the state of Jharkhand, one of the poorest areas of India. Being 100km away from the nearest healthcare provider, around 100,000 people live without medical attention. The whole structure is built using sustainable design principles, and is powered using renewable energy. The building project is approximately 50% complete, and we are aiming for completion by the end of 2018.
“This hospital is so important for the health and future of my community. Where else can people go when they are sick? I’m very excited about the possibility of training local young people to be holistic doctors, to give them a strong future helping their community” – Dada Biswanath Singh, Indian Project Manager.
The long term vision is that local people are trained in different holistic health modalities over the next five years, enabling a full hand over to the local community. The focus modalities are Acupuncture, Ayurveda and midwifery. Revenue from the low-cost treatments delivered to the local community will pay for maintenance and medicines, enabling the set up of a truly sustainable local health centre.
