As winter sets in, most of us reach for the warmth of our favourite blanket, turn on heating and snuggle up on the couch in front of TV.
But there are many who aren’t so fortunate. Thousands of Asylum seekers left the warmth of their homes and families in desperate circumstances.
The Asylum Seeker Centre, Sydney is seeking donations for their Winter Appeal so they don’t have to turn away an asylum seeker in need, leaving them to sleep on the street or go hungry, this winter.
The Centre is a non-profit organisation providing a safe and dignified environment for asylum seekers to live in while they wait for their claims to be processed.
OHO has been supporting the Asylum Seeker Centre since 2006, assisting them with the provision of basic healthcare services and treatments.
The Centre needs to raise $67,000 by the end of this financial year to ensure every new asylum seeker needing their assistance in the next six months can be supported.
Nearly half of those arriving on their doorstep are homeless and 8 out of 10 have no access to Government support. Most are denied the right to work and access to Medicare.
With a donation of:
- $80 you can provide a food parcel and a weekly train ticket to an asylum seeker
- $250 you can provide 2 weeks of emergency accommodation for an asylum seeker family
- $500 you can help up to 10 asylum seekers with essential pharmaceuticals
- $1000 you can provide 30 asylum seekers with critical, one-on-one Casework support – preventing homelessness and ensuring their safety and health
